    Gutu High dominates inter-Dutch athletics competition

    Gutu High school last week dominated the 2019 Inter-Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) Masvingo Province Athletics Competitions held at Zimuto High on Saturday after clinching 22 gold medals in six athletics disciplines.
    Gutu was crowned overall winner ahead of Pamushana who dominated last year’s tourney held at Gutu High.
    Gutu scooped 22 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze medals while Pamushana came second with 19 gold, 21silver and 12 bronze medals with Chibi claiming third position after amassing 14 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals.
    The school received certificates, a floating trophy and prize money for coming out tops with other schools receiving appreciation tokens for participating at the competitions.
    A total of 11 high schools, namely Pamushana, Alheit, Gutu, Nyashanu, Makumbe, Jichidza, Chibi, Morgenster, Zimuto, Margret-Hugo and Henry-Murray participated at the competitions.
    The competitions had six disciplines, athletics, javelin, long jump, high jump, triple jump, short put and discus.
    RCZ convener and Gutu High head, Mirirai Mutanda applauded the athletes for their spirited performances and urged participants to remain vigilante.
    “All participants did exceptionally well and deserve awards, we are proud to be having this annual event encouraging students to pursue their talents. These tournaments also allow us to interact as reformers and encourage one another to pursue our goals,” said Mutanda.
     Students who came out first in all disciplines were awarded with certificates and prize money.
    Participants were grouped using age differences and had four groups that are U15, U17, U20 an open category in which students above 20 years of age participated in.
    The competitions were characterised by energetic and determined displays from pupils, with some breaking previously set records, among them Silas Chinyama, a form 4 student at Gutu High who broke a previously set time record of 10 minutes for the 1 500m long distance run after he set a new record of 8 minutes. 
    Alheit head, Bernard Tagutanazvo applauded Zimuto for organizing and hosting the competitions.
    The competitions were sponsored by Kant Water and Mabhuku Bookshop.
