CHIVHU – An armed junior cop caused a scare at Featherstone Police Station near Chivhu recently when he held his  colleagues hostage and ordered his superiors to abandon a roadblock after firing four shots from his FN rifle into the air.
Constable Fortune Munyoro (33) took charge of Featherstone Police Station for a while as his seniors ran scared from an officer who looked determined to shoot at anyone who did not take his orders. Normalcy only returned to the camp after some officers managed to arrest  Munyoro few hours later.
Munyoro was granted $100 bail and the trial is going before Chivhu Magistrate Ngoni Nduna is now going on.
It is the State case that Munyoro was on night duty at Featherstone Police Station and assigned to the main entrance.
At 9pm he left his duty and went to a roadblock at the 103km peg along Harare-Masvingo Highway which was manned by seven Police officers.
He ordered the police officers including his superior Assistant Inspector Jumbe to dismantle the roadblock. At first they thought that he was joking however, the situation became tense when he corked the firearm and threatened to shoot his colleagues if they refused to comply with his orders.
The scared officers complied and left the roadblock in haste towards the camp. He followed them into the camp, firing his rifle from time to time.
The Police officers managed to persuade him to knock off duty at around midnight.
One of the cartridges from the shooting was recovered by the police.
Mike Choto appeared for the State.
