DA suspended over ED ally’s funeral

    The late Gerald Mudzengi.

    MVUMA –
Chirumanzu District Administrator Tapson Chivanga was suspended on Wednesday last week for allegedly failing to arrange the funeral of Chief Chirumanzu, a close ally of President Mnangagwa in the constituency in which both he and the First lady took turns to become MPs.
Chivanga was suspended through a letter written by Midlands Provincial Administrator Abiot Maronge. The matter however, seems to arise from the threats that Chivanga recently received from Zanu PF activists who wanted him fired for refusing to take instructions from the party.
Chief Chirumanzu, born Gerald Mudzengi was laid to rest at his farm in Lalapanzi on Saturday last week.
Chivanga confirmed the suspension but declined to comment saying that he is dealing with the case through the courts.
According to a letter in the hands of The Mirror, Maronge suspended Chivanga for failing to go to Chief Chirumanzu's homestead in the morning to attend the funeral as instructed by him. He only went there later in the day, according to the letter.
The letter, dated February 13 2019 also accuses Chivanga of  failing to draft a speech to be  read at the Chief’s funeral.
Efforts to get a comment from Maronge were fruitless as his mobile went unanswered.
Maronge initially wrote a  suspension letter  to Chivanga on February 11, 2019 in which  he  accused him of  incompetence and bringing the  Public Service into disrepute. This was after the DA broke into his office that had been locked by some violent Zanu PF activists who left a blocker on the door.
He amended the allegations and wrote another letter in which   he said that Chivanga had failed to properly handle the Chief’s burial proceedings.
“You failed to obey lawful instructions or perform duty properly assigned in that on 8 February 2019, following passing on of Chief Chirumanzu, I expressly instructed you to go to the late chief’s home in the morning of 8 February 2019. Instead of complying, you defiantly remained at the office throughout the day. You only got to the Chief’s homestead in the evening,” reads part of the suspension letter.
According to the suspension letter, Chivanga will report for duty on May 12 2018 after the determination of a hearing on his suspension.
Meanwhile, Melody Jiri will be the acting Chirumanzu District Administrator.
