BIKITA – A 60-year-old Bikita woman who was convicted of performing backyard abortions in 2008 is back in court with a fresh charge of the same crime.
Goodmore Chindoza of Chiware Village under Chief Mazungunye appeared before Bikita magistrate Calisto Mutema on Monday last week facing a charge of termination of pregnancy.
Section 60 Subsection (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act chapter 9:23 makes it illegal to abort.
Chindoza allegedly used her bare hands and a log to perform an abortion on Edith Rutunga.
It is the State case that on February 8, 2019 Rutunga visited Chindoza to get her three months pregnancy terminated. She told the court that her boyfriend had denied the pregnancy and that is why she went to consult Chindoza.
She had difficulties walking and blood stains on her clothes after the abortion which was noticed by someone who then insisted on knowing what had happened. A report was made to the Police.
The court heard that Chindoza was convicted for the same offence in 2008 and was ordered to do community service.
Magistrate Mutema remanded Chindoza out of custody to allow the court to look for documents on previous convictions. The Magistrate also wants Rutunga to undergo a medical examination.
