    BEITBRIDGE –
Some 844 people are in dire need of assistance after their homes were damaged by heavy floods that pounded the small border town of Beitbridge on Monday.
This was said during a meeting of the Civil Protection Unit of the district on Wednesday morning.
Giving a report on the situation, Jason Mgodzwa, an official with Local Government Ministry said heavy rains were received in the town and floods moved into low-lying houses where property and food worth thousands of dollars was destroyed. Also destroyed were books and satchels belonging to school children.
The floods in the houses were up to the waist level and 57 houses were affected, said a resident.
Analysts blamed the floods on poor or even non-existent drainage in the town. Others also said that the area where the houses are built in Dulibadzimu is low lying and this recurred every time when there are floods.
The floods were so heavy that a Toyota Vitz was washed away at a low lying were carrying out searches boarded an Urban Connect bus heading to Harare. They boarded the bus at Mapai turn off with the intention of robbing passengers along the way.
They told the Police that after the planned robbery, they wanted to proceed to Harare where they would board a bus to Zambia at Road Port and rob it along the way.
During searches, one suspect was found in possession of a revolver and further searches saw the accomplice being nabbed as well.
They were taken to Beitbridge Police station where they indicated that they had left a bag with a round of ammunition in the bus.
Bus attendants were phoned and nine rounds of ammunitions were discovered in a bag they had hidden in the bus.
Investigations indicate that the suspects are implicated in a number of robberies that took place in buses in several places and South Africa Police, Harare homicide and Masvingo Police have been alerted of the arrest.
