MASVINGO – Over 800 households in Rujeko A and C in Masvingo have been without power for three months and two weeks respectively after two transformers exploded in their areas.
Councilor Richard Musekiwa confirmed the situation and appealed to Government to intervene as a matter of urgency.
He said that a lot of problems have mushroomed as a result of the power failure including deforestation by residents who are looking for firewood. He also said the cost of living has gone up for the affected families as they resort to other sources of power including gas for cooking and taking their phones elsewhere for charging.
Another problem is that of security as Rujeko has become a ‘Bagdad or dark city’ and criminals are taking advantage to lurk in the dark.
“The situation is a crisis for Rujeko, one of the largest suburbs in Masvingo. The suburb is close to Mucheke River and criminals have become a nightmare as they rob and retreat into the swamps of the river. There is alarming deforestation going on and Government must act quickly to stop environmental degradation,” said Musekiwa.
Zesa spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira said people were vandalising transformers which are now being sold in US dollars making it a challenge for quick replacement.
Residents said that the transformers exploded after Zesa changed power lines. The first to explode was the transformer in Rujeko A and this happened on December 7, 2018.
The next transformer to explode was in Rujeko C and this was two weeks ago.
Desperate residents have formed whatsaap groups to find a solution to their problems. However, they told The Mirror that they were told by Zesa officials that there was no foreign currency to procure new transformers.
A posting on the group however, shows that Zesa workers collected the transformers last week and they would attempt to repair them.
