SHURUGWI - Shurugwi Town Council is losing 62% of its treated water through leaks and illegal connections, the town secretary Solomon Siziba has said.
He said that during a strategic meeting held at Flame Lilly Lodge in the small mining town last week.
“Our non-revenue water stands at 62%, thus we are losing 62% of our treated water through leaks and illegal connections This is against the international accepted standard of 25%,” said Siziba.
Siziba also added that the council is planning to introduce geographical information systems and other measures to reduce the loss.
“As a council we are planning to introduce geographical information systems and zonal meters to help us identify where we are losing the treated water and fix the problem during our 5-year strategy and this will help us minimise the loss and help people get improved water supplies,” said Siziba.
Shurugwi faces acute water shortages with some areas getting water twice a week for eight 8 hours. Some areas are not getting water at all because of low pressure.
Shurugwi councilors, council staff and other stakeholders are expected to sit down and draft a comprehensive 5 year strategy that will be used by the council .
