    MDC-Alliance election officers fined $500

ZVISHAVANE-Three MDC Alliance election officers during the 2018 harmonised elections have been jailed for three months or alternatively pay a fine of $500 for obstructing postal voting at the Government complex in Zvishavane
The obstruction happened during the postal voting process on July 15, 2018 and the ruling was given at Zvishavane Magistrates Court this week.
Albert Madondo (46) who was the Chief Election Agent for MDC-Alliance in Zvishavane-Ngezi constituency alongside Michael Timveous (54) who was the aspiring MP and Peter Hove (40) appeared before Resident Magistrate Archie Wochiunga facing two counts one of contravening the Electoral Act.
It is the State case that on July 15, at 5pm at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission offices, the complainant Regressa Dube who is Zvishavane District’s Elections officer was issuing envelopes of postal ballot papers to polling officers who had applied for postal voting for the 2018 harmonised elections since they were deployed outside their constituencies.
The accused, including the then Senator for Zvishavane –Ngezi Lilian Timveous who is still to appear in court and 25 unknown MDC Alliance members entered the complainant’s offices and obstructed him by ordering him to stop issuing out postal ballot papers to postal voters as they alleged that the complainant was rigging the elections.
One of the accused snatched a sealed envelope containing a ballot paper from a Enitah Manunure, a voter and handed it to the complainant. The accused further ordered the prospective postal voters to disperse and in fear of the threats from the accused, the voters dispersed thereby obstructing the complainant from performing his duties.
Acting in common purpose the accused threatened to break the complainant’s offices.
    Lloyd Maviza represented the State.
