    Masvingo High Court Judges clear 1 387 cases

    The High Court of Zimbabwe in Masvingo has officially opened for the 2019 legal year which began on January 14.
    The High Court was officially opened by Constitutional and Supreme court Judge, Justice Paddington Garwe on Monday at a colourful ceremony held at the court.
    The event was attended by lawyers, government representatives and other stakeholders and it was held under the theme; Consolidating The Rule of Law.
    Speaking at the event, Justice Garwe hailed judges from the magistrates’ courts to the High Court for clearing at least 85% of cases that they received.
    He commended Justice Garainesu Mawadze who heads the criminal court and Justice Joseph Mafusire who heads the civil court for completing a combined 1 387 cases in 2018 marking an impressive 92% and 89% clearance rate respectively.
    “The clearance rate at the Masvingo High Court for 2018 is 89% and 92% for civil and criminal respectively. Clearly this is a busy court and in time there will be need for the current complement of judges to be increased,” said Justice Garwe.
    Justice Mafusire completed a total of 436 civil cases out of 491 cases in the 2018 legal year which began on January 15 and ended on November 30, 2018 while Justice Mawadze completed 951 criminal cases out of 1038 cases in the same legal year.
    The first legal term runs from January 14, to April 5, 2019 when it closes for Easter Holiday with the second term commencing on May 13 until August 2, 2019. The third legal term will begin on September 9 and end on November 29, 2019 with the 2020 legal year expected to begin on January 14, 2020.
    The High Court of Zimbabwe in Masvingo was officially opened in May 2016 by president Emmerson Mnangagwa in his capacity as Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.
