DA commissions $55 000 Mpatsi piped water project

    Chikomba District Administrator Michael Mariga.

    SADZA -
Chikomba District Administrator (DA) Michael Mariga last week commissioned a solar-powered piped water project at Mpatsi Business Centre in Ward 26, Sadza in Chikomba.
The piped water project, which was established under the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programme and funded by Africare in partnership with UNICEF is benefiting close to 4 000 people in the Mpatsi community.
Thirty-two business people at Mpatsi Business Centre are also benefitting from the project.
The water system has a distribution network that is 5.6km long, serving Mpatsi Primary and Secondary Schools, Mpatsi Clinic and Chimombe Primary School and the local dip tank.
Speaking at the official launch of the water scheme, Mariga said the thrust of the project is to ensure adequate and safe water for villagers.
“Villagers are accessing tap water from 18 points throughout the ward. The capacity of the pipeline is enough to sustain irrigation, I therefore urge locals to fully utilise the water to ensure self-reliance and improved standard of living,” he said.
Chikomba District WASH chairperson Tapiwa Mapindu, who is also Chikomba District Development Fund (DDF) water technician said there is need to expand the project so that  Mudoti Primary School, which is only  one kilometre away from the pipeline  network,  will also benefit.
According to Mapindu, Mpatsi water project has the capacity to pump up to 40 000 litres of water per day, which can be used for  up to six days by the populace.
DDF has trained four pump mechanics responsible for repair and maintenance to ensure constant supply of water.
Mariga urged the community to come up with a committee which will ensure safeguarding of the solar panels and other equipment and also for proper management of the water system.
