    MASVINGO –
Some 300 Masvingo Polytechnic students have been called back to campus to rewrite papers that they sat for in a hall where some candidates were caught cheating on November 13 last year.
Riot Police had to be called to Masvingo Poly on Friday last week after the candidates refused to re-sit the exams and threatened to unleash violence at the institution.
Masvingo Poly Principal Calisto Muzongondi confirmed the situation but declined to comment further because he is new to the institution. He started work at Masvingo Poly last Monday.
The Mirror however attended the scene and found rowdy candidates refusing to enter the exam room and demanding for the principal and Higher Education Examination Council (HEXCO) officials to address them. The principal later asked the students to write a petition indicating their grievances which was to be forwarded to higher offices.
The Mirror later gathered that there were only six candidates from the Electrical Engineering Department who were caught cheating but the institute punished everyone in the hall including students from other departments like Mechanical and Chemical engineering. They all received a retake on their results.
The candidates insisted that they were not going to rewrite their papers since they were not caught cheating. They said invigilators should have the names of those caught cheating and it is only those who should write.
The students dispersed after writing their petition.
Students who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Mirror that it was not fair for everyone to rewrite the examination because not all of them cheated.
“I cannot be forced to rewrite an examination when I know for sure I did not cheat. I understood the examination rules and I know for a fact that only those who cheated in the examination are supposed to rewrite the examination or have their results nullified. It is unfair on our part because the invigilators have the names of the students who cheated and they should deal with them,” said a student from the Mechanical Engineering Department.
“Some of us want to further our studies or look for jobs but we cannot do that if we have an uncompleted course,” said another.
