    Chadzamira tours Chombwe Water Pipeline

    Ezra Chadzamira

CHIVI – The Minister of State for Masvingo, Ezra Chadzamira visited Chivi District last week where he toured the Chombwe Water Pipeline project that was started in the early 70s but has not been functioning from 2008 up to now.
The 10km pipeline which is in headman Madyangove’s area under Chief Chivi will provide water to 100 000 villagers in north-eastern Chivi, in Masvingo Province.
Speaking to villagers gathered at Chombwe hill. after the tour, Chadzamira said that Chivi District was the first to put forward to Government, a life serving project for development. He said the project that the district had proposed is the completion of the Chombwe Pipeline and said because of that Chivi will be the first district to benefit from the $31m that Masvingo Province is getting from Government under the $310 million devolution budget.
Chadzamira said the project will be embarked upon as a matter of urgency. It is also understood that Chivi Rural District Council has set aside $160 000 to support the project.
The project would draw water from Tokwe Dam.
Currently there is no clean water supply in the area and villagers are drawing water from the same muddy sources in Tugwi River that cattle and other livestock are drinking from.
The area is not suitable for boreholes and some villagers have been walking up to 10km to the nearest water source.
Chadzamira told the villagers that Chivi is the first district to bring a life saving project and as a result they will automatically be the first to be assisted.
Councillor Godfrey Mukungunugwa who approached the Minister for the completion of the project said he is happy with Chadzamira’s swift response. He said that Chivi is one of the driest districts of the country and development can only be sustained through water harvesting projects.
“I came to Chivi first because they are the first in the province to bring a lifesaving project to Government. This project has been lying dormant for 20 years. We have the money, each province was given $31m under devolution and Chivi will have its share as soon as possible,” said Chadzamira.
