All roads lead to Mutare at Sakubva Stadium this weekend where a total of 19 teams will tussle it out for the sixth edition of the prestigious Willard Katsande Under-18 Soccer tournament set for 22-23 December.
The tournament is bankrolled by former Zimbabwe national team captain and Kaizer Chiefs hardman Willard Katsande.
Panganai Mbaradza, one of the organisers of the tournament confirmed that there will be no prize money this year as this only saw coaches focusing on the prize at the expense of football development which is the main objective the event.
“Over the years winners of the tournament received monetary prizes but this year we decided to give away football kits and equipment,” said Mbaradzai.
Masvingo Province select will take part for the first time and the coach Billard Muchenje has promised to bring the trophy home as they are not going to make up numbers.
“We are first timers in this tournament and we are ready to face any team that comes our way.
“We have been training hard for almost two weeks at Mamutse Stadium in preparation for this and believe me my young boys are raring to go and want to put the Province on the map,” said Muchenje.
Masvingo prominent lawyer and former sponsor of Masvingo United Phillip Shumba who is Masvingo Provincial team select coordinator echoed the same sentiments.
“This is our first time at the tournament and we are going to showcase our talent at this tournament. Masvingo is abound with talent,” said the soft spoken Shumba.
Last year’s edition saw 17 teams competing and Mweyamutsvene emerged as victors walking away with football kit, a trophy as well as pocketing $1000 and Chipinge Academy were the runners up, and pocketed $500+ football kit.
Mbaradza also confirmed that Minister of State for Manicaland Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba, Caps United captain Hardlife Zvirekwi, Triangle United foward Pascal Manhanga and Liberty Chakoroma will grace the occasion.
Just like the Copa Coca Cola U15 tournament, the Willard Katsande’s tournament has also been hailed for giving kids a chance to the showcase their budding talent as well as putting them on the spotlight for scouts.
