    Ministry of Education holds orientation workshops for teachers

    MASHAVA - The Human Resources Department at the Provincial Education Director’s offices in Masvingo has been conducting a series of workshops with teachers throughout the province to create more awareness on their conditions of service as governed by the law.
    The Human resources section of the department spent five days in each of Masvingo’s seven districts dealing with topics such as leave days management, appointments, termination of employment, dress code and performance appraisals.
    Specifically the workshop dealt with Statutory Instrument 1 of 2 000 as Amended.
    Some 120 teachers attended the workshop on a daily basis and these were one teacher from each school per day and the whole exercise saw 4 258 teachers benefitting from the workshops.
    The workshop started in Gutu District in June 2018 and the last workshops were held at Renco Mine and Bikita on November 2, 2018.
    The workshops were manned by four officials from the personnel section namely Precious Jiri, Martin Mukanhaire, Bereavement Chaduka, Hope Shirichena and Andrew Mutambi.
    Opening the workshops, the officials said it became necessary to hold the training programme because teachers are not getting orientation when they leave college to join the profession. The Ministry is required to give such orientation but this has never happened because of lack of resources.
    “Teachers leave college and join the profession without getting orientation. There is therefore a lot of ignorance on their conditions of service including their leave days, termination of employment, promotions, self development programmes offered by Government for free. They can spend 30 years in the profession without knowing their rights as concerns leave days, promotions etc,” said Precious Jiri at one of the workshops held at Mashaba Primary School in Mashava.
    The human resources officials also told the teachers that apart from induction which they are supposed to get on joining the profession, teachers must be retrained every five years but unfortunately this again is not happening and teachers end up retiring without benefitting from such programmes.
