GWANDA - A total of $1490 was raised through pledges on Friday evening towards the Mayor's Christmas cheer Fund.
Gwanda stakeholders who gathered at Gwanda Hotel last Friday made pledges in cash and kind including second hand clothes, grocery worth $300, one basket hamper and 200 boxes of chicken from Chicken Inn.
Mayor Jastone Mazhale said remembering the less privileged at Christmas time must happen whether economic conditions are difficult or not.
"This is the day when we remember the less privileged in our community. By so doing we are cultivating a culture of giving.
"Helping the needy is not a responsibility of the council or Non-Governmental Organisations or Social welfare. It is the duty of every Zimbabwean. This year we moved an extra mile and made sure that the Mayor's Cheer Fund committee is comprised of every sector including women, disabled and the Youths who have shown keen interest in the initiative," said Mazhale.
