GWERU – A Gweru motorist is being investigated by Police after he allegedly ran over and killed a woman while trying to beat other motorists for a position in a fuel queue.
The incident happened in a veranda at Jaran Supermarket along Robert Mugabe Street in Gweru.
George Mbanje (39) allegedly hit and killed Vongai Mapako (43) who was sitting in the veranda with her husband Tavawana Chinyoka (50).  Chinyoka is said to be in a serious condition at Gweru General Hospital.
Mapako and her husband disembarked from a bus from Shangani at around 6am and they decided to sit in the veranda while waiting for shops to open. It was then that Mbanje allegedly ran over them.
    Mapako died on the spot.
Midlands Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident.
“Police in Gweru are investigating a case of a fatal traffic accident which happened last Sunday where a woman was run over by a car which was in a fuel queue,” said Mukwende.
However according to a vendor at Kudzanai in the early hours of Sunday morning there was a long fuel queue at Sakunda Garage and Mbanje spotted a gap between cars and he started his car and accelerated with the intention getting into that gap before others.
He lost control of the car and plunged into the veranda. Sources said after the accident he opened the door to his car and fled from the scene.
