Violence erupts over Chief Charumbira, Bere boundaries

MASVINGO RURAL- There were fierce clashes between the newly installed Chief Bere and Chief Charumbira at Manyama Business Centre ward 10 Masvingo Rural on Saturday last week and the matter was reported to the Police.
A letter in possession of The Mirror from Masvingo Rural Police to Masvingo district administrator, Roy Hove confirms the clashes which left Chief Bere’s official Isuzu twin cab damaged and his son, Phineas Tafireyi lost an X5 Gtel cellphone in the fist fight.
“Referred for your information is that the case of malicious damage to property that involved an unregistered vehicle that belonged to Chief Bere being investigated by Masvingo Rural CR 81/11/18. Another case of malicious damage to property involving Chief Bere’s badge which is being investigated under Masvingo Rural CR 80/11/18,” reads the letter signed by the officer in charge.
Efforts to get a comment from Chief Fortune Charumbira were fruitless as his phone was switched off.
This is the second time that the two have clashed over the boundaries since the installation of Chief Bere of the Shumba Murambwi totem in July this year by President Mnangagwa resulting in Chief Charumbira’s area of jurisdiction being reduced to only two wards.
On August 31 there were clashes at Ldyia Mboko’s homestead when Charumbira’s aides allegedly took away a map which was used to mark the boundaries of the new chieftainship.
The matter where former Masvingo West MP Tichaona Mharadze is one of the accused is now before Magistrate Langton Ndokera and the prosecutor is Fidelis Nyamukondiwa.
“On Saturday last week we went on a familiarisation tour of the Bere chieftainship area and our first stop was at Rufaro in the morning where we found villagers gathered. We introduced ourselves and addressed them, we did the same at Gokomere and Matova but when we went to Manyama we met Bylaw Charumbira and Winterton Chirove who blocked our convoy as we arrived at the business center where villagers were waiting for us.
“They started shouting obscenities at us saying those who installed Chief Bere have no power and Bere has no place to call his own. With the assistance of other villagers they started pushing the Chief ‘s car and threatened to burn it.
Winterton took away my badge by force and they also took Faustinos Tafireyi’s cellphone and smashed the car’s windscreen. We then made a Police report,” said Joseph Rungwe Chief Bere’s aid when contacted.
Bere chieftainship was resuscitated in 2017 after it was disbanded by the colonial Government in the 1920s.
