MASVINGO - A man from Ngundu who worked for a well-known housing development company has been slapped with a 30-year-jail term after he shot and killed his wife in cold blood.
The sentence was pronounced by Masvingo High Court Judge, Justice Garainesu Mawadze on Friday last week.
James Ngorima (29) of Ngundu under Chief Nemauzhe shot his wife, Lucia Sumaili (28) once on the head. Ngorima followed his wife to her parents’ home after an argument and shot her in the presence of her 6-year old child from a previous marriage.
It was the State case that on March 31, 2018 in Ngundu, Ngorima had an altercation with his wife after she accused him of infidelity. The two fought and the deceased sustained an injury under her left eye. In retaliation, she broke the windows of a Volkswagen Polo that the couple had bought, stole her husband’s phone and escaped to her parents’ house some five kilometres away.
On April 1, 2018 Ngorima drove to the deceased parents house looking for his wife but was told by the deceased’s brother Daniel Sumaili  that she had not visited them. Ngorima  drove to Buffalo Range in Chiredzi, some 100 kilometres away where he was employed by Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association (ZAHA) as a brick layer.
He stole a pistol which was used by Enias Mungeriya and Solomon Tigere who are employed by Spun Gold Security Services as security guards. The gun was kept in a drawer under a bed in the project manager, Emmanuel Zivhu’s office.
Ngorima drove back to his wife’s parents house and asked to divorce the deceased. Lucia’s parents went outside the yard searching for mobile network in order to call Ngorima’s parents and discuss the divorce.
He went to the car, took the pistol, went into a room where his wife was watching television with her 6-year-old daughter and two minors and shot her once above the right eye piercing her brain.
Emmanuel Sumaili, the deceased’s father ran to the room and Ngorima pointed the pistol at him before he drove off to the residence of a well-known land developer near Ngundu and hid there.  Women who were at the house phone the land developer who in turn called the Police and Ngorima was arrested.
The body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital where Doctor Godfrey Zimbwa performed an autopsy and concluded that the cause of death was head injuries caused by damage to the brain.
In his defence, Ngorima through his attorney argued that the deceased stole the gun from the car when she broke car windows and committed suicide at her parent’s house which was dismissed by Justice Mawadze.
“We find it highly improbable that the deceased who ran away from your violent behaviour would shoot herself in the protection of her family, if she was suicidal she would have killed herself at your house. What is her reason for suicide?”
