    Ndali head found guilty

CHIREDZI – Former Ndali Secondary school teacher in charge Alice Mukanga (38) was last week convicted of assaulting a male teacher after a misunderstanding during a meeting at the school.
Mukanga who was transferred to Majijimba School after demonstrations by pupils and parents, appeared before Chiredzi Resident Magistrate Constance Mutandwa facing assault charges.
It was the State case that on June 29, 2018 Mukanga called a meeting at the school where she accused Maths teacher Ziyanai Dekesa of insubordination. She blamed him for influencing other teachers, pupils and the community not to obey her.
She continuously shouted at Dekesa during the meeting that he decided to leave the room but on his way out Mukanga blocked him and slapped him several times in the face before she was restrained by other teachers. The matter was reported to Police leading to the arrest of Mukanga.
Mukanga told the court that she slapped Dekesa because he and other teachers were belittling her and undermining her authority because she was a woman. She also said she acted in that way as self-defence since Dekesa was also attacking her, a statement which was however denied by several State witnesses.
Magistrate Mutandwa dismissed Dekesa`s defence and said the complainant decided to leave the room and there was no need for her to block him. She also said if the issue was of insubordination she was supposed to explore other routes of punishing him which are allowed by law.
Mutandwa convicted Mukanga and sentenced her to 20 days or $80 fine to be paid by the end of this month.
    David Tafangenyasha prosecuted.
