ZVISHAVANE - Mupape Irrigation Scheme in Ward 18 under Chief Mazvihwa in Zvishavane which is sponsored by Lutheran Development Services has won the prize for the best district irrigation scheme.
Mupape beat four other schemes to the prize and they are Mabwematema, Bwedzedze, Danga and Bhanokubhano Irrigation.
The results were announced at Mupape Irrigation Scheme in ward 18.
The winners walked away with several prizes including money, seeds, farming equipment and chemicals.
Mupape was established in 1992 with a membership of 400 households and the number has since dropped to 95.
The Lutheran Development Services also helped with the construction of Mupape Dam which the scheme uses for irrigation.
The scheme which is 2 hectares in size is divided into 4 blocks and each farmer is allocated 0.056 hectares.
Speaking at the field day Assistant District Administrator Rodwell Mutetwa said that these competitions for schemes were there to encourage farmers to continue working for better results.
“I have realised that most of the crops are grown for home consumption. Farmers must go beyond that and look for markets from local institutions like Murowa Diamond Mine to sell their produce,” said Mutetwa.
He congratulated Mupape Irrigation for doing well on their scheme.
MerydithShumba who is the District Crops and Livestock Officer (AGRITEX) said that Zvishavane district is in the semi arid region and is wholly natural region 4 and 5 where there is very poor rainfall with extended mid-season drought ,hence irrigation schemes are a salvation to the community.
She also said that farmers need to improve overall agricultural management, adopt moisture conservation techniques, conservation agriculture methods where results have shown a lot of success and early purchasing of the necessary farm inputs, avoid siltation and continue to work with crop and production livestock officers and learn modern methods of farming.
Shadreck Charumbira who is the provincial Irrigation Engineer urged all farmers to work for food self-sufficiency instead of depending on donors for handouts.
Chairperson for Mupape Irrigation scheme Ephat Manhuwe showed his appreciation after winning the competition and said that they were willing to continue working hard so as to produce more products. He also said that they have managed to get markets for their products at supermarkets such as OK and companies like Murowa Diamonds though they still want bigger markets.
However, the irrigation is facing challenges of not having enough canals whereby water passes through from the dam to the gardens, Mupape said that as the scheme they were looking for a helping hand to get cement to construct more canals and also a fence that can cover their one hectare irrigation extension.
