    MASVINGO-
Female councillors from Masvingo Province have appealed to the Minister of Local Government Public Works and National Housing, July Moyo to increase their monthly allowances from $140.
“The allowances we are getting are very little and we are appealing to the Ministry to review them to enable us to perform our duties as representatives of the people on the ground. The allowances are gobbled up by transport as a result we are left with none to assist the needy in our wards, “said Virginia Whena ward 29 councillor from Masvingo Rural District Council on behalf of the female councillors.
Whena said this during the one day workshop held at Flamboyant Hotel sponsored by the Women in Politics Support Unit (WiPSU) last week on Tuesday for female councillors in Masvingo on the role of a leader.
The councillors also added that the allowances were not commensurate with their status in the communities that they live in as they are looked up to as role models.
They also complained about lack of funding for their proposed projects in their wards like the construction of weirs, dip tanks, roads, bridges and gardens which benefit women.
Kumbirai Takunyai from ward 10 Masvingo RDC said that they intend to build toilets which are user friendly to the girl child and people living with disabilities, but they are being hindered by lack of funding.
Dr Frederick Kasese of the Heavenly Coaching Clinic who was the facilitator presented a paper on the councillors should behave and the society’s expectations of a leader.
Kasese told the participants to be trustworthy by ensuring that they fulfil whatever promises they made to the electorate and be exemplary in their behaviour as they are Government representatives. Chengetai Nyamunda from the Social Welfare Department represented the Government while Ngoni Jemwa, Busi Sibanda, Bernigina Mudambiramwa, Mandy Nyamangara and Patricia Muganhiri stood in for WiPSU.
The councillors who attended were Grace Mukungunugwa ward 5 from Chivi RDC, Chipo Makurunje ward 22, Bernigina Mudambiramwa , Kumbirai Takunyayi, ward 10, Petronella Muzenda ward 31Sungai Matakanure all from Masvingo RDC, Acxillia Mhuru ward 29, Ndinatse Madzadzure ward 39, Jane Chamunorwa ward 15,  Simbanegavi Elizabeth ward 22 and Ravasingadi Fungai, ward 35 from Gutu RDC.
