    405 women raped in the Midlands

    GWERU – Midlands Province has reported 405 rape cases in the first nine months of this year.
    Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said 124 of the cases involved adult victims while 281 against are juveniles.
    The January to September 2018 statistics show a steep rise from the total of 218 women who were raped in 2017.
    Mukwende said that rape cases occur at any time of the day in both urban and rural areas and are being committed against girl children and women by relatives or strangers.
    She also said that some trusted people take advantage and rape the girl child and older women who are vulnerable due to mental illness, traditional beliefs or poverty or other unforeseen factors leading to child marriages.
    Strangers prey on both young and elderly women even girls who stay alone at homesteads, those in search of firewood also fall victim to motorists during the day or night at secluded places.
    “Generally according to survey most of these rape cases are being influenced by the fact that some children abuse technology such a social media. Furthermore, girls now want to experiment sexual acts that they would have seen on social media as they fall in love at a tender age with either men older to them or as well as of the same age. Cases of this nature are only reported after the victim fall pregnant or after the parent discovers or suspects that the child is indulging in sexual activities,” said Mukwende
