MURAMBINDA - A woman from Tivafire Village under Chief Makumbe has lost $833 to two conmen and a con-woman prowling at Murambinda Growth Point and pouncing on unsuspecting victims.
Tsitsi Nyekete (42) confirmed her predicament to The Mirror as she almost broke into tears in the presence of her 17-year-old son Chenjerai Mushandukwa.
Manicaland Police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said that they have not received the case.
The suspects tricked her and exchanged her ZB Bank card with a POSB one. By the time that she realised that her card was gone, the suspects had already withdrawn $833 of the $1 629.76 that was in the account.
Nyekete who had travelled to Murambinda from her village to do shopping had only used $30 before her card was stolen.
According to Nyekete, the con persons who are still at large used the cards to purchase fuel for $27, goods worth $779 from Bilcro Wholesale at Murambinda, $26 cash back and $1 for water; to make a total of $833.
Nyekete was coming from Agribank where she had managed to withdraw $30 and was on her way to Durawall to check on some kitchen chairs.
It was then that she was approached by some three suspects who passed pleasant comments on an African attire that she was putting on. They then asked about its price.
“I told them I bought a 6m cloth for $25. They asked me to help them find their way around Murambinda since they were Mozambicans. They also asked me to help with counting their bond notes because they were not familiar with them,” said troubled Nyekete.
She said that the suspects had $1 500 in cash. They claimed that $1 000 was in United States dollars and $500 were bond notes; hence, they wanted her help to count the $500.
Nyekete was then asked to buy them water and as a woman she felt compelled to help them. She was accompanied by the woman to Chakaza 2 Supermarket and she bought two bottles of mineral water worth $1.
On getting back, she was told that it was time she went with one of the suspects to Murwisi Supermarket to collect the money they wanted counted.
“Before I left with one they called Tawanda to Murwisi the woman asked for my bank card saying that she wanted to put a mark on it which will help her know that she would not steal the money from them. She reached into her bag and took out a tissue and wrapped the card and placed a plastic on top of the tissue. I did not suspect anything since everything was done while I was watching. She returned the card to me and placed it back in my handbag,” said Nyekete.
Nyekete and her son lost Tawanda on the way to the supermarket and decided to return to where they had left the suspects but again the the other two were no longer there.
Nyekete continued with her business before going back home.
At some point, she decided to unwrap her bank card and she received the shock of her life when she noticed that her ZB bank card had been replaced with a POSB card.
She was then advised to go to the bank to secure the account before they withdrew all the money that was in the bank account.
The matter was reported to Police and investigations are still going on.
