Bulilima District tops in HIV in Mat South

Gwanda High pupils prefer condoms to abstinence

GWANDA - Bulilima District in Plumtree is leading in the HIV prevalence percentage in Mat South Province with a rate of 25.1%.
A  National Aids Council 2017 HIV Estimates Report indicate that in second position is Mangwe District with 23%  and Matobo District has a prevalence rate of 19%.
Giving his report at the Gender based violence stakeholders coordination meeting held last week, the Monitoring and Evaluation officer for NAC, Wilfred Ngwenya said Mat South is amongst the top three provinces in HIV prevalence with females more infected than males.
"Mat South is among the top three provinces in HIV prevalence with 23.6% women infected compared to 15.78% males in age groups between 14-49 years.
There is inconsistency in the use of condoms as a result, STIs’ remain high in the province.
"Gender based violence is also high and Beitbridge reported 53 cases of abuse between July and August 2018. Of those, 45 cases are females between the ages 15 and 24. We still have other norms that are fuelling GBV and child marriages," said Ngwenya.
Sibonginkosi Mlotshwa, the marketing and communication officer at the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council said some school children from Gwanda Government High disclosed during a survey that they are already engaged in sexual activities.
The pupils told those conducting the survey that there was therefore no need for them to be taught abstinence, rather it was better for them to be supplied with condoms and be taught how to use them.
She also said Mat South has the second highest teen pregnancy  at 30% after Mash  Cental which has 31% teenage pregnancy rate.
