SHURUGWI - Chiefs in Shurugwi have agreed to make it illegal for expectant women to give birth at home.Chief Nhema (Otheniel Ngere Munetsi) said this during the handover of a classroom block at Zhaugwe Primary School last week on Monday.
He said that anyone who flouted this rule would be made to pay a goat.
Nhema who is also the commissioner-in-charge of Tongogara RDC said home births presented challenges when children want to get national identity records because there will be no birth records.
He also said there were many health challenges posed for women who gave birth at home.
"We as chiefs have agreed that those who give births at home will have to pay a goat as a fine in order to encourage women to give birth at registered health institutions," said Nhema.He said that Tongogara RDC is working hard to make sure that everyone gets access to clinics by building as many as possible.
