Cottco workers arrested for stealing ETG cotton

CHIREDZI – Several Cottco workers have been arrested and will soon appear in court for allegedly stealing cotton from Indian firm ETG Parrogate which is a competitor.
ETG Parrogate Lowveld Regional Manager Dakarai Makuyana accused the Government backed Cottco of confiscating their cotton and stealing empty packs.
ETG Parrogate is an Indian company operating in Zimbabwe.
Makuyana said detectives from Chipinge are investigating the incident and 40 bales full of cotton were stolen by known individuals at Cherechere buying point. The individuals re-packed the cotton into Cottco packs and resold to Cottco. He also said thousands of wool packs were stolen from their company and they were labeled in their rival's name.
Cottco Lowveld Business manager Munyaradzi Chikasha said there were company workers who were arrested but this was on trumped up charges. He said his company was asked to repack bales at Cherechere by Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) and they never stole any wool pack from ETG Parrogate.
"We are playing the game in an uneven field where our rivals are playing a big brother attitude and using State resources to continue suppressing us. Forty bales full of cotton were stolen from us at Cherechere and we reported the matter in Chipinge and officials from Cottco were picked up and they will appear in court this week.
"We also lost over 3 000 wool packs but to our surprise we are now the ones who are being accused of stealing and being unfair. We are an investor who is finding it difficult to operate because of suppression. Police are making further investigations and we hope more arrests will be made," said Dakarai.
