MDC Alliance gets temporary relief on rebels

MASVINGO – The move by the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) to drop eight MDC Alliance rebels from Parliamentary elections and then reconfirm them as contestants again 24 hours later has raised eyebrows.
ZEC published a list of eight MDC Alliance  rebels the Commission had dropped from the ballot papers after they withdrew their candidatures. These were dropped out of the race in a notice published on Tuesday this week in a move that brought  relief to an opposition alliance  afflicted by double candidates in a number of constituencies.
However, barely 24 hours later on Wednesday, ZEC published another notice restoring back six of the candidates to the ballot and four of them are from Masvingo. These are Mupini Knowledge, Gutu West; Mandigo Ernest Gutu Central; Makota Justin Masvingo South and Zivenge William Zaka West.
However Maramwidze Hamandishe of Gutu North was effectively withdrawn from the Parliamentary race leaving Juniel Manyere as the sole party candidate.
Efforts to get a comment from Utoile Silaigwana ZEC acting chief elections officer were futile.
MDC Alliance chairman for Masvingo James Gumbi had earlier accused some national executive members of having blundered on the issue as they signed papers for more than one candidate per ward or constituency.
He said that the province submitted the correct candidates to the party leadership and there was hope that the wrong ones would be dropped but if that failed Gumbi prayed for consensus where the constituencies will agree to come together and stand behind the recommended candidate.
