New Chief Wedza installed in Zvishavane

ZVISHAVANE - Kennias Mnyamani Moyo (69) has been installed as the new Chief Wedza of Zvishavane by the Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Owen Ncube.
The ceremony was held at Rusvinge Primary school grounds two weeks ago and hundreds of people turned up for the occasion.
Moyo's appointment follows the death of Philip Hlati Tumbudzuku of the Zibanayi house on October 21 2014. He also becomes Chief Wedza in the Wedza traditions and customs in the 'collateral succession custom' that states that the royal houses, Musiwedziyo, Zibanayi and Mdonga rotate in order of seniority where the eldest surviving descendent in the selected house becomes the Chief.
The Wedza chieftaincy is one of the biggest in the populous Zvishavane District alongside Mapanzure, Mafala, Mazvihwa and Masunda and it is of the Moyo Sinyoro totem.
Moyo was born on April 1 1949 and did his primary education at Rusvinge Primary School up to Standard 3 and went on to work as a casual labourer at Rhodesia Railways and left for Kadoma Patchway Farms before  resorting to full time subsistence farming at his homestead in the De Beers Block. He is married to Lucia Mudhonga and they have eight children and18 grandchildren.
The Wedza Chieftainship is believed to have originated from Swaziland and the Masukume people moved northwards to the Zambezi River fleeing the Zulu tribal wars which were rampant at that (1800) time. After failing to cross the Zambezi River they settled in the Wedza area in Mashonaland Central before moving to Shawasha in Masvingo.
Thereafter they were invited by King Lobengula and settled at Mpopoti in Matebeleland South and then migrated to the Ture YaWedza Mountain which became the Chief's stronghold till today.
