MDCT consensus process fails in Chiredzi

CHIREDZI – Movement for Democratic Change led by Nelson Chamisa are heading for primary elections in Chiredzi West after efforts to create consensus between aspiring candidates failed over the weekend.
The process which was led by national executive member Clifford Hlatswayo ended prematurely on Sunday leaving the party with no option but to conduct primary elections for both council and parliamentary seats.
MDCT Masvingo provincial spokesperson Dust Zivhave who is also aspiring candidate for Chiredzi West said Hlatswayo came to Chiredzi on a mission to allow candidates to agree on who should stand for the party but the process failed after other members tried to smuggle issues which were beyond the national member`s mandate. He said only a few wards agreed but those in urban Chiredzi failed to agree and the party is now heading for primary elections.
"We had a national member Hlatswayo who came to initiate the consensus process but unfortunately there was no movement regarding that process. We are heading to primary elections in Chiredzi West in most wards and the constituency. There are some people who brought the issue of quarter system in other wards but the national member had no mandate over that issue and that created disagreements. We will be notified of primary elections dates" said Zivhave.
There were also accusations of imposition of candidates after an unknown diasporan based in the UK, John Manyange threw his name into the ring to contest for Chiredzi West constituency. He was believed to be linked to National Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora but Hlatswayo advised him to make an appeal at Harvest House. Four other candidates Simbarashe Baloyi, Dust Zivhave, Stanley Temba and Charles Jacobs are also eying Chiredzi West.
