Detained ZNA soldier burns blankets in the cells

CHIREDZI – A soldier with the Zimbabwe National Army arrested for assaulting a fellow patron in a bar in Chiredzi is facing fresh charges after he allegedly became violent while under detention; damaging a wall and a door inside his cell before burning a blankets.
Magistrate Constance Mutandwa remanded Martin Zavave based at Buffalo Range Airport to March 7, 2018 when he appeared before her on Wednesday last week facing two counts; one of assault and another of malicious damage to property.
The State alleges that on February 24, 2018 Andrew Chaurura was drinking at Farai Bar and Zavave approached him and asked for some beer but Chaurura refused.
Zavave allegedly hurled insults at the complainant, accusing him of too much pride. He took a wooden stick and assaulted Chaurura several times on the head and the latter was ferried and admitted at Chiredzi General Hospital after bleeding profusely.
The State further alleges that after being arrested Zvavave damaged a wall which separates a toilet and the cell where he was detained. He allegedly vandalised the cell door with bricks before burning some blankets.
    Chiedza Muhwandavaka prosecuted.
