Manyame RDC demands $1 000 for regularisation of illegal settlers

    SIMBARASHE MTEMBO

BEATRICE - Manyame Rural District Council which is plagued by illegal urban settlements compounded by the district's proximity to the cities of Harare and Chitungwiza has resolved to regularise some of the settlements but the concerned illegal settlers must register now and go through the normal residential stands procurement process.
Manyame RDC planner Edson Munjanga said Council has registered 8 000 illegal stands parcelled out through co-operatives, land barons and traditional leaders.
He said all those who acquired stands through illegal means must register now and after that any further settlements will see the people being evicted.
He said that council is now servicing the areas where there are illegal settlements and some of them are Marimbi, Kuora, Murisa, Masona, Chitanda, Nechiva, Washayadunha, Kaseko, Chitsvatsva and Rusirevi.
"Those who are regularising their settlements are required to register first, pay a reconciliation fee of $1 000 and then pay for the stands at the rate of $5 per square metre.
"We have begun the construction of a main road connecting the settlements and we expect to complete the project by mid-year. We are urging all settlers to register with the council and avoid eviction," said Munjanga.
