Urgent investor meeting for Tokwe Mukorsi

    •     Call for an independent agent to run investments

MASVINGO – An urgent meeting is likely to be held this Friday to discuss Government's approach to investment at the just commissioned Tokwe Mukorsi Dam.
The meeting comes amid new thinking among leaders in Masvingo that an independent agent would be more ideal, more efficient and less corrupt in terms of finding and approving investors at the US$260 million dam.
New Minister of State for Masvingo, Josiah Hungwe confirmed the meeting.
Tokwe Mukosi which became Zimbabwe's largest inland dam after its completion brought with it immense investment opportunities in agriculture, tourism and fishery.
Hungwe said that there is a thinking that Tokwe Mukorsi must be run by a private agent rather than Government. He said Government would stifle investment because of bureaucratic tape, corruption and disagreements among inter-government departments.
"It is true that we are likely to meet on Friday because there is a strong sentiment that Government must leave the running of business at Tokwe Mukorsi to a private company. The sentiment is that with Government there will be a lot of corruption and hence a lot of prejudice to the country," said Hungwe.
The affairs of the dam which was commissioned by former President Mugabe in May this year are currently being run by an inter-ministerial taskforce that involves several Government departments. The arrangement has been found to prolong decision making.
"There will be a lot of corruption as long as Government remain involved in the running of the affairs of Tokwe- Mukorsi. Each director from the Ministries will bring his or her own people.
"So this is the idea that an independent agency which has no relatives can allocate fisheries, land for hotels and other projects without fear or favour as it would be paid to do just that," said Hungwe.
Meanwhile it is not clear whether MBB Consultant, a South African company contracted to come up with a masterplan has completed its task.
