MP Gwanongodza to pay $6 500 for unfair labour practice

MASVINGO– Chivi Central MP, Ephraim Gwanongodza has been ordered to pay $6 556 in overtime to an employee who worked 20 hours a day at his Vashandi Cooperative Bar instead of the designated 7,5hours a day.
The plaintiff worked at the bar from 7am to 3am the next day, everyday. The lawmaker was also found guilty of unlawful termination of employment of the plaintif as he made a verbal termination over the phone.
Gwanongodza who runs a bottle store and Vashandi Housing Co-operative was also ordered to pay Martha Nhewede $366 for forcing her to work during public holidays without overtime. Fambai Mandeya, a conciliator for the National Employment Council (NEC) for the Catering Industry made a third ruling in which he ordered Gwanongodza to reinstate Nhewede whom he dismissed unfairly or pay damages whose quantum is to be determined.
Nhewede was represented by Owen Mafa of Mutendi, Mudisi and Shumba Legal Practitioners.
According to the papers of the case Gwanongodza fired Nhewede over the phone and did not even give reasons for his action. It is then that the employee reported her case to NEC.
Gwanongodza who was not represented argued that his business did not belong to NEC for the catering industry. He said he was subscribed to the Commercial sector and therefore wanted the case to be taken there.
However, a ruling was made to the effect that the bar workers belonged to the catering business.
