MASVINGO – A snap survey by The Mirror shows that this year's Grade 7 pass rate for Masvingo is generally lower than the previous years with the number of pupils with distinctions throughout the subjects much lower.
There also seems to be fewer schools with 100% pass rates and teachers blamed the drop in pass rates to poor performance in English.
"Generally pupils would have distinctions in four subjects but had two units or more in English," said a teacher from one of the top Grade 7 schools.
This year Grade 7 pupils sat for five subjects instead of the traditional four.
However, Roman Catholic –run Gokomere Central Primary School had 100% pass rate but the number of pupils with distinctions throughout fell from more than 40 last year to just six this year.
Victoria Junior has 94.7%,16 pass rate and 18 pupils had five units.
Dikwindi Primary has a pass rate of 94, 49%. Helen McGhie recorded a pass rate of 94.3 %.
Zimuto Camp has a 100 % pass rate, Runyararo Primary School 99% and five pupils had 5 units; Vurombo Primary School had 97% pass rate and six pupils had 6 units; Shakashe Primary School had 98 % and seven pupils had 5 units and Francis Aphiri  had 86 % pass rate and one pupil had 5 units.
