ZAKA - Zaka Rural District Council (RDC) has resolved to take village heads to court for defying Council orders and selling land that has been earmarked for the expansion of Jerera Growth Point.
Village heads, particularly Village head Benjamin have continued to sell land that has long been appropriated to Council.
The Council resolution was made in October.
Ndeya Nyede who is the Acting District Administrator confirmed the council resolution and told The Mirror that Zaka RDC is taking the village heads to court because the land that is being sold is already under council's Government approved plans. He said village heads were therefore selling Council property.
It is understood that the matter will be going to court anytime this month.
Zaka RDC chairman Sebastian Musundire said the village heads were given notices about council expansion plans many years ago but they continue to defy and build illegal structures in approved local authority land. He said the defiance was delaying council development projects.
"Village heads know that they are on council property. We are taking them to court for defying notices that we gave them many years ago," said Musundire.
"Yes council is taking the village heads to court and this is because we tried to negotiate with them but they refused to comply as they continue to sell council property without approval. Council has expansion plans that are approved by Government and the village heads must stop what they are doing," said Nyede.
Some areas where the expansion plan is being defied are Nezaka, Benjamin, Gumbire, Manyimo, Pepukai, Mateko, Mushayavanhu as well as Nikai.
Council is currently developing Nyabare Park an extension of Jerera Growth Point.
Chief Ndanga is said to have held a meeting with village heads in a bid to stop them from constructing houses in the areas in question.
However Chief Ndanga said he was not aware of this issue  when asked for a comment.
Village head identified as Benjamin reportedly refused to comply saying that he is building on his forefathers' land and giving it to land seekers. Efforts to get a comment from him were story
