GWERU – Shurugwi's Tongogara Rural District Council has proposed a $2 369 392 budget for 2018 after full consultations with stakeholders.
The budget is the same as that of last year.
The local authority's Chief Executive Officer Brian Rufasha confirmed the development and told The Mirror that the budget has since been forwarded to the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, on November 17 for approval.
"The January 1 to December 31 2018 financial year budget has been crafted after consultations with chiefs and stakeholders in all the 24 wards. The budget did not really change much from what we have this year.
"Our budget performance has been fairly good considering the generally bad economic situation in the country. The performance has so far been above 60%," said Rufasha.
Tongogara RDC, unlike many local authorities in the country has paid its employees' salaries and wages on time every month. Currently, the majority of local authorities have salary backlogs that stretch many months.
Rufasha also said that Tongogara RDC was involved in a number of successful projects such as the building of classroom blocks, clinics, road maintenance and paying of fees for 150 less privileged kids.
"Although the year 2017 was a difficult one, we embarked on a number of successful projects including building classroom blocks and five clinics which are now at different levels of construction. We also managed to pay school fees for 150 students and a lot of road maintenance was done.
"Another major highlight is that we paid salaries and allowances and statutory obligations when due and we can confidently say that we are pacesetters in this area as a council," said Rufasha.
In 2018 the local authority is looking at constructing a secondary school and acquiring road construction equipment and some vehicles. Council will also drill at least two boreholes per ward.
