Thousands attend Unki Mine annual sports day

GWERU – Thousands of workers from different organisations took part in the Anglo American owned Shurugwi based platinum miners Unki Mine sports day commemorations meant to encourage healthy living on Friday last week.
The celebrations which were held in Gweru and Shurugwi and involved sporting disciplines like netball, cycling, marathon, soccer, darts, golf, marathon and fishing saw workers from other organisations like OK Zimbabwe, Mimosa, Zimbaabwe National  Army and Boltgas attending.
The sports day was also part of Anglo American's golden jubilee celebrations in the country.
The sporting event which started with only 100 people five years ago has grown from strength to strength now with over  1000 workers attending from other organisations.
Unki Mine Managing Director Walter Nemasasi said that the company has developed a health culture amongst its workers and these competitions are meant to strengthen that.
"For the first two years of this event it was known as Unki Golf Day and was meant for our workers only but we transformed it into a bigger event incorporating other organisations with other sporting disciplines being added each year and this year they are nine of them for people to stay fit," Nemasasi.
Winners of various sporting disciplines walked away with trophies, household gadgets and medals. sport news
