CHIREDZI – A 15-year old girl from Hippo Valley died from burns sustained in a fire that raged through a sugarcane field where she was sleeping.
The girl had allegedly been chased away from home by her angry mother.
Martha Hlupeko of Section 7 in Hippo Valley died at Parirenyatwa Hospital on Saturday after she was burnt on October 23, 2017 while sleeping in the sugarcane field.
Tongaat Hullet Corporate Affairs and Communications Manager Adelaide Chikunguru confirmed the incident and said investigations to establish what happened are still going on.
"Yes I can confirm that there is a girl who died after sustaining serious burns when fire swept through a surgacane field where she was sleeping. Investigations into the circumstances are still underway. We wish to send our heartfelt condolences to the family" said Chikunguru.
The Mirror is informed that Martha was asked by her mother Elizabeth Matande to wait for her at a bus stop. She waited as instructed but her mother used a different route home.
Martha later went home after seeing that it was late but her mother was furious and chased her from home. She had nowhere to go and went to a sugarcane field and at around 730pm Tongaat hullet workers set the sugarcane field alight.
