Bermud veers off the road, kills 3 Telone trench diggers

MVUMA – Three workers digging a Telone optic fibre trench 32km from Chivhu
along Chivhu-Mvuma Road died on the spot when a Bermud Bus heading towards Harare veered off the road and ran over them.
The accident happened on Wednesday morning (yesterday) and sources said the driver who is suspected to have been overspeeding saw an oncoming vehicle as he tried to overtake a haulage truck at the Sebakwe River Bridge.
Midlands assistant Police spokesperson Ethel Mukwende could not get details of the accident at the time of going to print. Sources said the Bermud bus driver
plunged into six workers who were lifting up a generator that they wanted to use along the river.
The six were using ropes to lift the huge generator with three on each side and it is the three on one side who were crashed to death by the bus while the three on the other side were either severely injured or just scratched. The bus landed a few metres from the riverbed after hitting a tree. All passengers in the bus escaped without injury. The bodies of the deceased and the injured were taken to
    Mvuma District Hospital.
The trench diggers were employed by Best Group, a company contracted by Netone. The Mirror was given the names of the deceased as Albert from Goromonzi, Last Shangarapai from Rusape and Richard Nhongo from Harare.
One of the injured employees sustained multiple fractures on the right lower limb and a deep cut on the forehead and another had minor head injuries.
An ambulance arrived swiftly just about 50 minutes after the accident.
Last week another Bermud bus that was coming from Chivhu is said to have hit a
lorry at Mavise near the same place where yesterday's accident happened. Passengers in the lorry escaped with minor injuries.
