MASVINGO – Tragedy struck in the most unusual way when a Grade 4 pupil from Rhodhene Low Density Suburb in Masvingo died after he hung from a washing line where he is alleged to have climbed up as he played with a four-year-old kid on  Wednesday last week.
Relatives believe that Tanatswa Nyanyiwa got entangled in the plastic rope that formed the washing line and suffocated to death. However, a postmortem says that Tanatswa broke his spinal cord after falling from the washing line and the damage to the spine could be the cause of his death. The washing line is in the veranda of the house.
Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed that Nyanyiwa died from a cervical  spine injury.
"Only God knows how he died because  the only other person present when this happened was a four-year old child. We thought that he got entangled on the line and died but the postmortem says the cause of death is a broken spinal cord," said Matanga, uncle to the deceased at the funeralTanatswa was buried at Mangwandi Cemetry in Masvingo on Friday. Tanatswa's father Mufaro Nyanyiwa said the news came as a shock to him.
"The news came as a shock, earlier on I had talked to his mother over the phone and she told me that the family was doing fine only to hear that Tanatswa had passed on in the afternoon," said Nyanyiwa.
Speaking at the funeral, the deceased`s uncle Matanga who was one of the first to arrive at the scene said upon realising that the deceased was gasping the four-year old went to a maid who was cooking inside the house and informed her.
"The maid went outside and found the boy hanging from the wire and eyes popping out of their sockets. The maid called the mother of the boy who in turn called me. The boy was removed from the line," said Matanga
