DRIEFONTEIN – He was one of a kind; a Catholic priest who preached, sang and danced.
None could sum up the man the way Harare Archdiocese head, Archbishop Robert Ndlovu put it at the burial of Rt Reverend Bishop Xavier Munyongani at Driefontein Mission near Mvuma on Friday.
Many Catholics said the Church will never have anyone like him again. He was a compelling preacher who left a mark in both the heart and mind with every sermon that he gave.
"He brought immense joy and happiness at conferences and other church gatherings," said Archibishop Ndlovu.
He was a simple man with immense love for his flock. His love for people spontaneously came from the heart, added Archbishop Ndlovu.
He said Sekuru Munyongani believed that the vocation of the Catholic Church was to proclaim the gospel that liberates and brings joy to the afflicted.
He said Bishop Munyongani treated other people with warmth that came from the heart. He described him as a cleric with a deep sense of urgency of the gospel who responded fully to the Missionary mandate.
"As we bury Bishop Munyongani today I recall in a special way his passion for Christ, his passion for the word of God. He had words for every occasion and numerous songs as well.
"He preached, he sang and he danced for Christ. Munyongani was convinced that our vocation as Church is to be present in society by proclaiming the Gospel that liberates and that brings joy to the afflicted.
"I have known Bishop Munyongani for many years, from the time we were studying for the priesthood together at Chishawasha Seminary. As you know, he was a well built man but soft-spoken for a man of his size and gentle. He had a great sense of humour, treated others with warmth that spontaneously came from his heart and had the power of grace," said Archbishop Ndlovu.
The Archbishop said he spoke with Bishop Munyongani for more than 30 minutes a day before he died. He again spoke with him for 10 minutes about four hours before his death on Sunday 15 October 2017.
