GWERU – Fletcher High School in Gweru launched the Dr Eliah Munyikwa Award in memory of one of the sharpest brains to walk through the institution's corridors.
Dr Eliah Munyikwa who was a Medical doctor died in the United States in Hagarstown and was buried at his rural home in Musema  under Chief Chiwara Gutu.
Launching the annual award with a cash prize of US$200, Fletcher Class of 81-86 chairman, Henry Maindidze who is based in the United States and had flown back to Zimbabwe for the occasion said the award was being supported by the family.
The Munyikwa family was represented by Eliah's mother Eneah and his uncle Professor Ranga Zinyemba who is the Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University. The award is given to an A Level science student who has shown exceptional academic and social qualities and is planning to pursue Medicine at University.
"Eliah was one of the most brilliant students to ever walk through the corridors of Fletcher and he exuded qualities that need to be replicated", said Maindidze.
He said Eliah was the best student in his group from 1980 to 1985 and wrote four subjects at A Level and had 20 points. He was awarded a scholarship to study Medicine at the University of Cambridge but he went to the University of Zimbabwe.
He studied Medicine and became a specialist in kidneys.
An Upper 6th student Diana Mudungwe won the inaugural prize.
Maindidze noted Munyikwa's qualities of humility, empathy and desire to work towards alleviating humanity hence his choice of a medical profession against engineering or any other profession.
Munyikwa's brother Priviledge who also went to Fletcher is a medical doctor in the USA while their father was a school head at Gutu High School.
