CHIKOMBA -Residents of Chivhu are living in fear of car thieves who are on a spree, striping cars parked at home at night of parts including batteries, draining fuel and removing anything that they can take for resale.
Residents of the small transit town said thefts can be as many as 10 per week and complained that Police does not appear to have a keen interest in curbing the crime.
Efforts to get a comment from Mashonalnd East Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza were fruitless as he repeatedly promised to get back to this reporter.
Worried residents told The Mirror that motorists were no longer parking cars at home because of fear of the thieves. They said cars are being left at secure places in town like banks, Chicken Inn, supermarkets and car owners then catch a lift home.
Edson Matanda who owns a Toyota Alteza said his car was parked at his place of residence in Rooiport when he discovered in the morning that the bonnet was open. He realised that a window was broken for access and a computer box, six coil packs and three censors had been stripped and taken away. The suspects also went away with a cover for the engine.
He said the damage and value of the stolen parts is over $2 000.
Markford Nyikadzino, a director with Shinestar Dry Cleaners lost an Exide battery worth $94, coil packs worth $180 and a window was broken to gain access.
A resident who declined to be named said numerous reports were made to the Police but no one has been apprehended. He said the problem started at the beginning of this year and the cases are increasing.
"We are worried that we are losing thousands of dollars' worth of property and the Police seems to be making no headway," said a resident.
Some residents said they are now considering selling away their vehicles because once stripped, they cannot replace them.
