NKULUMANI MLAMBO

BIKITA – In what is probably the first by a top Zimbabwean soldier, Retired Major General Mashingaidze (65) is the new chief Mukanganwi of Bikita following recommendations sent to Government by Masvingo Provincial Assembly of Chiefs.
There is no decorated soldier or commander of the armed struggle of his rank who is known to have become a traditional chief.
An ecstatic Mashingaidze confirmed the development and said he will no more look for elected political posts.
Mashingaidze is among four other new chiefs whose names were confirmed by the Assembly during their meeting at Flamboyant Hotel on Friday with the other ones being Finias Tafirei who becomes Chief Bere, former prominent bus operator, Tanda Tavaruva who will be installed as Chief Gutu, Clemence Madzingo as Chief Norumwe, Mhumi Mapfumo as Chief Zimuto, Madhubwi Mutero who becomes chief Shindi.
According to the new constitution recommendations for new chiefs and even revival of lost chiefdoms is done by the assemblies of chiefs.
Mukangamwi is one of the many chiefs of the moyo, vaduma or gono totem that are found around Gutu, Zaka, Bikita and Masvingo Rural districts with Mukangamwi being one of the largest.
There are three families in The Mukanganwi Chieftainship which are; Funhiro, who held the chieftainship, the Chihumburu family where Gen Mashingaidze hails from and the Mushanduri family.

Mashingaidze was one of the highest ranking soldiers in the Zanla forces being the deputy provincial commander and political commissar for Manica Province with Paradzai Zimondi being his commander. His nom de guerre was Gibson Gumbo. After independence he joined the Zimbabwe National Army as a Major. He rose to the rank of  Major General.
He will be installed as chief once Government confirms the recommendation.
"I can confirm that I was selected the next Chief Mukanganwi. I am awaiting the Minister responsible for confirmation and the date of my installation. Am already busy relocating from my sugarcane plot in Buffalo Range to Bikita to take up my post on a full time basis. I am quitting politics for good, zvema elections no more," said Gen Mashingaidze.
