CHIREDZI – Service delivery operations at Chiredzi Town Council have been grounded as ZIMRA has garnished the authority`s bank accounts in a bid to recover $1,2m owed to the tax payer in statutory obligations.
Acting Town Secretary, Engineer Wesley Kauma confirmed the development that has drastically affected operations at council as the local authority has no money to buy fuel, pay salaries and provide services. The council has since approached ZIMRA with a payment plan in order for the garnish to be lifted.
"Our operations are in shambles after the garnish because we dont have a cent to conduct the day-to-day operations. We have since approached ZIMRA with a payment plan according to their advice and it is our hope that the garnish would be lifted very soon," said Kauma.
The council which mostly survives on ratepayers is owed over $3m by residents and businesspeople who are failing to pay their rates on time.
