MASVINGO – Helen McGhie, one of the best primary schools in Masvingo Province is the 2016 winner of Secretary's Merit Award and this most coveted education prize was handed over at a function held at the school on Friday last week.
The award was presented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Sylivia Utete-Masango.
Making the presentation, Dr Masango in particular noted the massive infrastructural development that has taken place recently at Helen McGhie and this includes a state of the art computer lab and five classroom blocks which include ECD classrooms. She also noted the consistently high pass rates where the school has achieved grade 7 pass rates of above 95% in the last five years.
She challenged Helen McGhie which is the most sought after primary school in Masvingo Urban to score 100% pass rate this year.
She said that the Secretary's Award does not come cheap and this is demonstrated by the fact that Helen McGhie was winning it for the first time in its 69-year-old history.
The school received a  plaque in liue of the Secretary's Bell and E-learning equipment that consists of 45 laptops, a standard projector, interactive board device and white board donated by FBC Bank.
The event was also attended by the Provincial Education Director Zedius Chitiga, the district education officer Ishmael Chigaba and senior education officers from across the province.
Dr Masango said some criteria for the award were good governance, effective implementation of education policies, implementation of non-formal education, sustainable income generating projects, balanced and inclusive curriculum and optimal teaching and learning environment.
"A school that is conferred with the prestigious award would have scored above 80% on the score card.
"We have today an illustrative example of Helen McGhie Primary School which after 60 years of its existence, has succeded to win the Secretary's Merit Award. The years Helen McGhie has been working relentlessly to achieve the award demonstrate that the award does not come cheap. It requires focus and singleness of purpose on the part of the school leadership. It calls for effective planning and execution, paying meticulous and painstaking attention to detal," said Dr Masango.
