Six fish poachers drown at Tokwe - Mukosi Dam

    SYDNEY MUBAIWA

TOKWE-MUKOSI – Police is getting increasingly concerned by the number of fish poachers who have drowned at Tokwe –Mukosi since the dam was constructed.
The figures indicate that so far six poachers have been reported but Police says the number could be much higher.
Masvingo Province Acting Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the report.
He expressed concern over the increase in deaths of poachers in the dam and other dams surrounding Masvingo. The poachers are using home-made canoes that are unsafe and expose people to the dangers of drowning.
"We have several cases since the dam was commissioned and these are people who are poaching fish. The majority of these poachers are using home- made canoes that are not safe. The Police is going to increase patrols around the dam to contain fish poaching," he said.
He encouraged locals to apply for permits so that they get involved in fish farming at the dam rather than involve themselves in illegal activities.
Tokwe–Mukosi is Zimbabwe's largest inland dam with the capacity to hold 1.8 billion cubic meters of water. local news
