MASVINGO – ZIFA Eastern Region Division One debutants Mucheke Pirates' match against former Premiership side Mutare City Rovers at Mucheke stadium was abandoned after the visitors complained of poor lighting last Saturday.
Mucheke Pirates aka Dzinochekwa Baba spokesperson Godfrey Mutimba said although the visitors complained of poor lighting it is because they sensed defeat hence the refusal to continue with the match after 70mins of play.
"These guys knew from the beginning that they will be walloped because at first they caused the delay of the match by insisting on player licenses which they know very well that no team has been issued with them. The match only started at 4PM after we made a printout from the ZIFA website which has all the players' names.
When we were leading 2-1 they started complaining of poor lighting which came as a surprise to us.
We are now awaiting ZIFA's decision on the way forward but we feel we should be awarded the match based on the score line," said Mutimba.
This was a big opportunity for the Pirates had they collected maximum points to go on top as joint leaders with Buffaloes who are on 20 points from 10 matches.
Meanwhile, Mutimba has promised their legions of supporters not to lose heart and continue to support the team even during difficult times and encouraged the players to remain focused in their remaining matches in order to clinch the title.
"I urge the players to remain focused despite such problems and I would like to promise our supporters that our next game against Buffaloes in Rusape on Sunday will be a thriller and we will get maximum points from the log leaders,' he added.
