MWENEZI – Two men from Harare have been jailed for six months after they attempted to sell fake rhino horns at Lundi Business Centre in Mwenezi.
Registra Emmanuel Mushayavanhu (54) of Warren Park 1 and Knowledge Chitima (32) of Glen Norah A were nabbed at Lundi as they tried to sell the 2 horns weighing 2,41kg to a Chiredzi man.
The two pleaded guilty to the charges when they appeared before Mwenezi Magistrate Honest Musiiwa and were convicted of possession of articles for criminal use 'fake rhino horns'.
"We were expecting to get US$3 000 after selling the horns. The buyer had promised to give us US$1 500 and pay the remainder after he sold the horns," said the duo in mitigation.
Musiiwa sentenced the duo to 10 months in jail each and suspended four months on condition of good behaviour. The horns were forfeited to the State after being certified fake.
Prosecutor, Willard Chasi, said on June 26, 2017 at around 1630hours Police detectives from Mineral and Border Control Unit (MBCU) Chiredzi received information that the accused persons were in possession of two rhinoceros horns which they intended to sell at Lundi Business Centre.
On the same day, a trap was applied for and was authorised by Superintended Mutongoreva of Chiredzi District Headquarters.
Chasi told the court that on June 27, 2017 acting on a tip off, Police detectives went to Lundi Business Centre with the purported buyer, Charles Maunze.
The accused persons appeared and offered to sell the two fake rhino horns to Maunze while Police detectives were watching from a distance.
The duo ran out of luck when Police detectives pounced on them before they could conclude the transaction with the buyer.
The two fake horns were produced in court as exhibit.
