ZAKA – The gold rush that hit Zaka in the last few days has claimed its first victim when one illegal miner died after a tunnel in which he was digging for gold collapsed on him.
The incident happened on Saturday and a second person was seriously injured.
The accident occurred after hundreds of gold panners from different parts of the country invaded Mapurisa village in the Fuve-Panganai area under Chief Nhema in search of the precious mineral.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said her office is yet to receive the report but Rangarirai Bwawanda who is Chief Nhema confirmed the incident and said Silas Gwature of Mapurisa village died on his way to hospital after a shaft fell on him.
He said Police had sealed the area but on that night there was no police presence leading to the panners taking advantage and entering the area.
"I can confirm that there was a fatality at a mine in Fuve which is under my area. The incident killed one person who is a local and injured another one whom we failed to identify. The mine produced a lot of gold at first but by the time Police sealed it off, the output was no longer that attractive" said Nhema.
